Our legs support our whole body weight. Without strong legs muscles, the weight will be on the joints - resulting in knees and ankles issues. Maintaining strong legs also support and protect the back, especially when you need to carry your kids or heavy things on a regular basis. Without strong legs, the tendency is to bend your back. With strong legs, you will bend your knees to pick up your little ones.
Having a strong core has many benefits as well. They includes protecting your spine and keeping it upright and open. When you hold yourself upright, all your internal organs have more space to breathe and circulation improves. More nutrients and oxygen can reach them and wastes can be removed from them more efficiently. The organs will function better and you feel better and more alert. This in turn improves our immunity. On a physiological level, a strong core protects the other muscles and prevent straining your back and joints. On a physical level, a strong core supports an open posture - with rib lifted, and wide collar bones, i.e. chest opening posture
Utkatasana (Chair Pose) works the legs muscles and core. Doing it against the wall will also help to balance your hips if one side of your back is weaker. Chair pose is not only good for leg and core strengthening, it also opens the chest area and our hearts. This stimulates our thymus gland which is located at our chest area. Thymus is responsible for T-cells which are soldiers to fight off infections, and plays an important role in our immune system.
