Our body requires mobility in some parts and stability in others to function optimally, without pain and injuries. For instance, our neck, lower back and knees require stability while our thoracic spine, hips and ankles require mobility. This allows us to move freely and steadily through a whole range of movements.
Mobility within a joint is the degree to which the area where two bones meet is allowed to move freely (also known as articulation) before being restricted by ligament, tendons and muscles. Mobility relates to movement while stability relates to control through the coordinating actions of surrounding tissues, such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves.
What may restrict mobility could stem from muscles tightness, among others. Muscle tightness could be a result of poor posture. Overtime, the limited mobility in one joint could cause other muscles or joints to overwork and become stiff. This may results in pain and/ or injuries.
Hence, it is very important to bring awareness to your daily posture, be it sitting, standing or bending down to pick up things/ children. The repeated actions, if done in the wrong ways could often result in pain/ strain. However, if done correctly, one will build the correct muscles and strength, and retain the flexibility and range of motion.
Pause, breathe, and be aware of your posture, now. Could you position your neck directly above your shoulders instead of craning it forward. Are your shoulders relaxed and released away from your ears? Are you standing tall?
Hope this note help to bring some awareness to your daily posture.
