This week's theme is chest opening with core strengthening. There are many benefits to chest opening asanas (poses), including improve immune system as it stimulates the thymus gland which is located at our chest area. Opening the chest also allows one to breathe better, and hence bring more oxygen to the brain (for better mental clarity and sharpness) as well as our muscles (better quality and hence faster recovery). Chest opening pose will also improve your overall posture, especially if you spend prolonged hours hunching over the electronic devices.
Some poses that are very for good chest opening are as follows. Please do not attempt these poses by yourself if you have not tried it before or have certain medical conditions/ injuries.
- Matsyasana (fish pose) is a very good and relaxing chest (heart) opening pose that also helps to relief stress and stimulates the thyroid glands. It also stretches the upper and mid back as one arcs into the fish pose. However, this pose is not suitable for people with neck problems, heart disease or hypertension.
- Prasarita Paddottanasana C (Wide-legged forward bend) C is another good chest opening pose that also lengthens the spine and stretch the chest and shoulder muscles.
- Purvattonasana (upward facing plank) opens the chest area and strengthens the core, legs and arms.
On the chakra level, chest opening stimulates and opens the heart chakra which governs love. So open your chest (roll back your shoulders) and receive more love and good opportunities to come. :)
